Poetry is a way to express a topic that can connect individual's to something, it can inspire other's to find meaning. In this section of Mrs. Burnquist's activity, we were given 5 minutes to write a short poem centered on the topic of our Kahiau Project. I used poverty as a result of gender inequality. To really connect to the topic and get in touch with our emotions, Mrs. Burnquist encouraged each and everyone of us to use a photo of our topic. This form of art can be used to showcase and highlight social concerns in history and/or modern society. Through this poetry discussion I was able to create a new way to express how I feel about poverty, and though it is not quite finished yet, It still speaks wonders and highlights the big concern of poverty due to gender inequality. My poem means that poverty is a major issue we face globally, and there are many kids who have to live on the streets and search for their next meal or they will starve. This is a topic that is a huge concern in Hawai'i and thus "sending shivers down my spine" because it is a huge concern, and affects my own community. During the past year, poverty has inclines a fair amount, and a huge part of it is due to Covid-19, since many individuals list their jobs and lost their source of income to support their ʻohana. The last part of the poem discusses how gender inequality plays a part of poverty. Many women can suffer from lack of employment, job segregation, lack of political representation, and much more due to their gender. "Late in the winer o my seventeenth birthday, He stopped trying to bring me back. I walk to the bus station by myself, The way we figure to carry on". Amitav Ghosh. "The Glass Palace". John Green. "Looking for Alaska". Rainbow Rowell. "Carry On". Rainbow Rowell. "Eleanor & Park". Anything can be a poem. From Mrs.Burnquist's activity where we were asked to create poems with book spines, or simple sentences from a book, we as students learned that anything can be a poem and speak wonders. Poetry is a form of literature that can speak wonders. From the activity, I came to the realization that poetry is quite simple. Poetry is a form of expression, it is powerful and can make an impact. For this activity, I decided to use the first sentence, or phrase, of each of my favorite books. The books I used include The Glass Palace, Looking for Alaska, Carry On, and Eleanor & Park.
