Throughout the events in both Gandhi and the rabbit-proof fence, we see a constant need of the British to have power. In both of these scenarios, the British are belittling the native people of the land and end up trying to “normalize” the natives. For example in the movie the native girls at Moore river were forced to speak English rather than their own native tongue; they were also not allowed to practice their own culture they had to pray and that was final. And because of this, overall native people, in general, have been faced with discrimination in their land.
I feel like both the British Mindset and Modern American mindset have one big similarity the need for power. Both of these mindsets believe that their way is the right way; they believe that by using their methods of expanding power new resources will come their way and nothing could stop them. For example, the British Mindset back then revolved not around communism but instead a system of which the white man should be in control. On the other hand, Modern American want to establish the fact once again that the white man is all-powerful and that lesser ethnicities such as the Mexicans do not belong, The technological advancements used in World War 2, which was not even supposed to happen after the great war, worsened are situation in Hawaiʻi. Because of the new technologies, a bomb was launched on the beautiful island of Oʻahu. By doing this a traumatic experience flowed over all of the islands. This was a shock to the native identity, safety, and security of the people of this island. Overall the technological advancements made that was displayed through the pearl harbor bombing have been a tragedy that was remembered throughout the entire island. To the leaders, I would want to tell them on the behalf of the lāhui that they should take into account that putting the blame on someone will only make things worse. When you put the blame on someone or one country retaliation is most likely to come around. This war was meant to end all of the wars forever; however, instead of making things fair not taking everyoneʻs feelings into account before making any drastic decisions. No one person/country should be left out of making a decision that will affect them. Citation: Attenborough, R. (1982). Gandhi [Film]. Noyce, P. (2002). Rabbit-Proof Fence [Film].
