Overall I feel as though the enlightenment, industrial revolution, colonization, and imperialization worked together to create one major problem poverty. More specifically I will be looking at two components colonization and imperialization. If you really think about it with colonization and imperialization peopleʻs countries were being conquered and taken from them. Through these two things, a variety of factors can play into people living in poverty; for one if land is overturned it is not guaranteed that the local people will be given an equal wage to their racial superiors. Besides this, colonization and imperialization can lead to discrimination; if there is any form of discrimination in a workplace from someone in a high position that person is more likely to lose their job. Discrimination can be from things like race, religion language practically anything. Through these things language and culture could also be lost leaving people in complete shock. The two specific components of poverty are colonization and imperialization.
Here in Hawaiʻi we have grown and sunk a substantial amount due to colonization and imperalism. We have dealt with disrmination amongst our people. However, in order to truly deal with the problem of poverty, we need to gain our native identity back. We should not have to be afraid of discrimination in the workplace or even when walking through the streets. We need to begin to see ourselves as equals with the foreigners because although we as Hawaiians have been through the moon and back with our culture everyone is still human. Together we need to make an effort to influence others to choose decisions that are in the correct path; their decisions is what can revolutionize the face of Hawaiʻi. If people living in poverty can feel comfortable with who and what they are they will be more likely to call for help. We as Hawaiians need to take control of our land! For me learning about the variety of different leaders that impacted history has allowed me to grow as a leader. The variety of examples that this class has provided me with has opened my eyes to what leaders looked like throughout history. Through projects like the leaders then and now I was able to look closely into two leaders who had different strategies to leadership. For Haunani Trask, she chose the loud, proud and infuriated route while Alexander the Great took the route of having a plan of action. Overall these two leaders have taught me that I need to have a plan of action but I also need to voice my opinion with confidence. However, despite these two leaders another leaderʻs quote has stuck out to me. This quote is by Baruch Spinoza and he exclaims, “The world would be happier if men had the same capacity to be silent that they have to speak”
One thing that has affected my personal motivation was the Kahiau project; although this project is for a grade this project has allowed me to focus in on the problems of our society. Rene Descartes enforces that “It is not enough to have a good mind, the main thing is to use it well”. To me this quote is reflected in my project because most people are capable of helping those who are having a rough patch. However, it’s their actions that truly prove what type of people they are. Overall my Kahiau project has pushed me to go forward and make a difference Citations: Descartes, R. (2001). Rene Descartes Quotes. The next organization we chose was the food bank; despite emailing them they did not respond and still have not responded to our email. After all of this we moved on to Lanakila pacific meals on wheels; however, this organization also had the difficulties that came along with it. We ended up having a problem with one of our applications, finding a chaperone and above it all they are not very quick in response to their emails. We ended up not completing the community service that we had planned to do over the break due to many setbacks. Despite these problems we are planning to start our community service soon. Although we havenʻt made it to the community service yet, I hope that when we do get the opportunity to go that we will have created even the smallest difference in the community. I feel like we would have been able to complete the service by the original deadline if we had emailed the organizations all at once. By doing this I feel like it wouldʻve prevented us from scrambling around to find community service. However, despite our downfalls, some problems laid out of our hands because of the delayed responses of the organizations. Overall I feel like once we are able to get everything in order our community service will be a memorable time for all of us. As we continue on in the project I believe my understanding of all of the UN issues will deepen. However, due to the fact that we have not done the community service yet, I have not been able to grow as much as I would have liked. To me I feel like I had excellent leadership skills, to begin with. Despite this, I feel like after completing the community service I will be able to deepen my leadership skills. I believe that at this organization I will be able to work with and observe those who take charge in their community to make it a better place. aloha united wayʻs society of young leaders. (2017).
