For our community service project, we decided to do a beach clean up. We decided to do a beach clean for our project because it relates to our Empire issue which is Environment. My group participated in a beach clean up with 808 Cleanups at Hālona beach on January 4th. I was on Kauaʻi over break and I did a small beach clean up there at Marine Camp beach. During the service on Kauaʻi I got to walk on the shores and pick up all the trash and plastics with my friends. We ended up filling a few trash bags after the service was done. Somethings that went well during the service on Kauaʻi was that I was able to clear up a lot of trash ground in a fast time. My friends and I walked along the beach and were able to easily pick up many pieces of trash with our gloves. Nothing seemed too difficult throughout the service, but one thing that couldʻve gone better would be the weather. It was a little overcast and windy. Other than that, it felt good to clean up that area and clear up some trash ground on the island. Yes my understanding of poverty and the other UN issues are improving. I am starting to better understand the causes of the poor living problems and other problems such as environmental issues. My connection to leadership skills are also expanding as well in doing this Kahiau project. From this project we decided to step up and did what we thought would be right for our ʻāina. Standing up and doing the right decisions for your community are some key leadership skills and my understanding has progressively improved.
