I donʻt think the Cold War ideas and the threat of WW3 impacted us during this COVID19 situation this year. However, many unfortunate events have occurred in the year 2020 such as natural disasters, conflict between nations, and an unfortunate health pandemic affecting people worldwide. The Cold War ideas (nuclear war) and the threat of WW3 would just bring in more problems during this time. We canʻt predict what our government and President can do, but those ideas can definitely impact all of us during this miserable time.
The work with the Kahiau project has prepared us for this “new” living way in the COVID19 environment by looking at other perspectives and finding other ways to take care of the environment. Our topic from the Kahiau Project is “Life on Land” and the work and research we have completed have given me many ideas on how we can mālama the ʻāina. We have learned about some of the causes of environmental issues such the new inventions of technology, the use of warfare weapons, and even buildings and ships. This project research has taught us that we can do simpler tasks to decrease the environmental issue. Some examples are recycling, group clean up at parks and beaches, and using technology that is environmentally safe (solar power, eco-friendly items). This has prepared us for this new way of doing life during COVID19 by learning about different ways we could keep our ʻāina healthy and take care of the people during this pandemic.

From the Scientific Advancements created from World War 1&2, I think that humanity had an impactful effect, but it was one way that technology was experimented to gain information to strengthen the use of technology. During those wars, especially during World War 2, a big number of technical warfare weapons and transportation appeared. The newer technology was able to turn the tide of the war and won WW2 for the allies. However, humanity was affected by all the new scientific technology. Nations werenʻt prepared for these new weapon attacks and as a result, many fatalities occurred in other nations. But from there, technology only got stronger. In my opinion, I don't think the new advancements were “worth the gain”, but it did allow engineers and builders of warfare creations to strengthen their products. As a result, humanity has gone through a lot throughout both wars, and part of it was due to the powerful impact of the Scientific Advancements. Today, the scientific advancements continue to impact our modern society as it can affect our ʻāina and living health in Moananuiākea and Hawaiʻi. The newer technology has created problems on our ʻāina such as air pollution, debris on land, ocean pollution, and even destruction of habitats. As a kānaka leader, I think that we should care about our future for our land and our people. I donʻt think it’s “worth the gain” for the scientific advancements to “take over” our ʻāina, ʻohana, and lāhui. I think that our future should deserve way more from us and what we are doing to protect one another. The scientific advancements can do so much to change our ʻāina, but affecting our roots means that our culture may not be the same anymore. It is not “worth the gain” for our society to change our culture for science. In the movie Gandhi, the imperial mindset is shown by the British wanting to take over India. Gandhi was shown to be a nonviolent leader and he wanted India to have their own independent rights as a country. He had a passive protest towards India’s independence even though he was dismissed by the English officials. He knew that he could help his country come away from the controllment of the British in a nonviolent way. From the Rabbit Proof Fence movie, the country of Jigalong was also invaded by white officials. The English men wanted to seperate the children of Jigalong from their families and bring them to a training camp for domestic working far away from their homeland. Three girls from Jigalong were taken away to the camps, but decided to flee the area and attempt to make it back home. Colonization of the white English men have caused the three girls to make a risky escape so they could be with their families. The mindset of the girls wanting to escape back to the place where they belong shows how colonization has affected many people.
Some important factors that could possibly set up acts for war could be competition over territory, land, and resources, past historical events (rivalries), and self-defense for the countries. Relating to our Kahiau Project, our topic has to deal with life and resources on land. Many countries have gone off to war to fight for better preserving land for their own country. But war has led off to more issues in land and resources. The environmentʻs health staus have slowly decreased throughout time due to reasons such as war. Today, the problem with wars aren’t as present compared to our past, but the technology was another factor that has currently affected our environment today.
In my opinion, I don’t think that the world learned the lesson of the War to End all Wars. After the Great War, there were many other controversial moments in history between countries that have caused wars to take place. Our Kahiau project has been impacted by the actions of The Great War. The Great War has influenced other countries to participate in war and it has drastically changed the environment. As technology increased, the more it was used in wars and it has affected the environment. The environment was then affected because of the pollution and harmful events during war. More wars later took place due to the Great War and the technology has evolved during time. The environment of many countries, were greatly affected in the end and our environment continues to struggle. |
