Colonization had a large impact on gender equality and breaking but also enhancing those “gender norms”. In our hawaiian history, men and women both shared different (at times separated) kuleana. We can also see this pattern when looking into different parts of history and different cultures. The colonization of Hawaiʻi brought not only different opportunities for women but also affected how the women were treated for these foreign people with new customs being introduced. The mana women of hawaiʻi were given all kinds of kuleana and the impact the english women had on them were both similar and different to what they knew. This history and this impact on our culture here hurt our modern efforts because they were “normal” and they were what everyone knew/lived by. Although, they also help our efforts to meet these challenges because we know now how to go about these ways and women have a voice to speak out about these problems. Imperialism continues to take a toll on our culture and how we see things in history because the way history is written. We learn about our history and what happened from the perspective from the “winner” or the “good guy” and we donʻt necessarily learn things from the other perspectives. Therefore, when we learn about our past culture issues and the things that really took a toll on our language, culture, etc. we don't learn the root of the problem/what caused it, we learn about it from the “good guys'' tale. From this, it now affects us as hawaiians and our culture today because we have those missing gaps and that unsolid hawaiian foundation due to these events. For example, the language ban. Our own language was banned from being spoken in schools by students because they wanted to make english the top priority. Although, that resulted in tons and tons of native hawaiians not knowing how to even properly speak their native language. Another example is the entering of the missionaries. We learn the stories of the missionaries coming to “improve” our economy and our land when they also took a giant toll on our native populations autonomy. Therefore, this does help us to navigate a solution from these problems because we can learn from these past events and not make the same mistakes twice. Apa citations:
