Some examples of how stores like Walmart have been creating challenges on my island by making things really cheap. This makes us want to go there instead of local businesses because of the price of everyday items. There are many big stores like Walmart, Walgreens, and Target all over the island. They take away from little businesses whose prices just cannot compete. With all of these stores they all produce trash but with a lot of them, they create more trash than all of the local stores. This bad because a lot of that trash will end up in the oceans. I do see a specific person in my life that is struggling with poverty. His name is Uncle Tony, he sleeps outside of Mcdonalds at Kam shop. He has a job and a cell phone but he mostly uses all of the money he has for food and his cell phone bill. He uses his phone to look at pictures of his kids and to call them. He cannot afford to buy a house here on this island and that is a real struggle for him. And because of the way he looks a lot of people don’t feel inclined to help him, so that is a social challenge Something that I have learned about how economic trends impact my global issue is that they all lead to mass trash pollution. And a lot of that trash don’t even make it to the landfill. They somehow get into our oceans. My understanding of the impacts of this has influenced the way I see my groups topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem that does need to be addressed. The trash that ends up in our oceans is affecting marine life as well. It kills our fish that we eat, it is also affecting our coral reefs where the fish live, and if they have no home, they won’t just stay here to die, they will go find a new home. So this is a problem that I think needs to be addressed.
