Colonization is the “the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.” Long ago, foreigners came to Hawaiʻi and eventually they colonized us. Ever since then we have lost our title of a Kigdom and became the 50th state of the U.S. Now that we are no longer on our own, but rather under larger “rule”, this colonization impacts my Kahiau project topic of clean and affordable energy. Being apart of a larger country, we now depend on the mainland and U.S. government for our resource and other relative things. We also depend on them for fossil fuels to generate electricity / energy here in Hawaiʻi. I think this colonization hurts our modern efforts to proceed to clean energy because when they came long ago, they introduced us to their way of things and so we forgot how to think for ourselves. Now we are no longer like our ancestors and depend on them and their resources instead of using the land and our own resources here locally. Imperialism has changed understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community. Ever since we were annexed through military force and no longer declared our own kingdom, our perspectives changed as native Hawaiians. In result of this and the foreigners, we lost our cultural identity and part of ourselves as kanaka. We are now taught in our school about the past and hearing these stories, knowing about how imperialism impacted us long ago, still affects us today. We are conditioned to think that all foreigners going to another place where there are natives on that land, is a bad thing, because of our past experiences and stories. In relation, I think it kind of defers us from navigating for a solution to non-renewable sources here in Hawaiʻi. My reasoning behind this is that ever since we became a state, we have not really been able to think for ourselves, being that we are now under the countryʻs power. With them thinking for us, weʻve gotten used to not thinking for ourselves and so we rely on them. However, we arenʻt the only state they focus on and so all these aspects combined result in a delay in coming up with solutions for local problems. Works Cited:
