Many leadership skills are needed to address and execute both the big picture and the small picture. For example communication, determination, problem-solving, and commitment are traits of a leader that are required to become one. More skills are needed, but I feel like those are the basic ones. Having verbal communication skills is very useful because it allows you to talk amongst others and work as one unit instead of working individually. Determination is another skill needed because if we aren’t determined to want to lead our community, then our community won’t change. Being determined to become a leader is a key thing because it shows deeply what kind of person you are or if you are lazy. In addition to determination, problem solving is superior because if one solution doesn’t work then replanning to come up with another one is extremely useful and helpful.

The topic or problem my group is focusing on is poverty, more specifically homelessness. Our group chose to pay attention to poverty around our island because it is sad that a huge number of people have to live through this struggle that they didn't choose to live through. It could be from their past family issues, lack of money, or cost of living. We wanted to make a change and see a shift in our society causing more people to get off of the streets and not laying around parks. What affected my group, but more importantly me individually, was just looking at or picturing my future. I donʻt want our society to stay the same when we get older or for the next generation after us because that wouldn't be a good life to look forward to living. I wanted to strive for excellence in this project because if we didn't make a change, the outcome of this project was a fail. If we fail, we didn't present “Kahiau” in any way by giving back to our community. Going back to last semester, Kahiau means to give lavishly with the heart. I will know I was successful if there is a change in the society today. youtu.be/CZ_8jjXpa64Our plan was to help the needy or homeless by donating a handful of canned foods and working with the Hawaiʻi Food Bank. But on the other hand, what exactly ended up happening with the planned Community Service over Winter break did not follow through. My group was extremely busy during this entire break because we had basketball and soccer. Also we live far from each other. I think our planning went very well. Since they all live close to each other or on the other side of the island, it was easier, but I was the group member that didn't live near them so it was difficult for me to drive to their side. What could have gone better is if we followed through with our plan. My group will compensate by doing twice as much during spring break. Yes, my understanding of poverty and other UN issues of humanity is improving as time passes because I see it more in our environment. Yes, but also no, my leadership skills are expanding because my group had a whole plan set out for us, but we sadly didn't accomplish it because we were all busy with sports such as basketball for the three boys and soccer for me. |
