Colonialism and imperialism continue to impact or play a part in perpetuating the problem in my Kahiau Project both globally and here in Hawaiʻi because with expansion and exploration, Europeans were able to find their way to Hawaiʻi and soon overtook the locals, conquering and ruling the land through force, military force. My Kahiau Project focuses on the issues of poverty. With the exploration of Captain Cook, it brought many diseases to Hawaiʻi in the past, which was the start of many deaths occurring because of the outspread of the diseases brought by Cook’s crew. Since our land was taken over by Europeans, not just shown through Captain Cook’s arrival, but also with the overthrow of the monarchy, Hawaiʻi is now a part of the United States. This can also be shown here in the modern day through the pandemic, Coronavirus. These diseases were transmitted through interactions with others, and are spreading through contact, and have been a huge cause of locals going into poverty through the years of 2020-2021. This has definitely negatively affected our modern efforts because as more and more people come to Hawaiʻi and settle down, the larger the population is and the more locals are pushed to the streets. OZY DigitalPhotograph. https://www.ozy.com/true-and-stories/how-the-american-empire-destroyed-the-kingdom-of-hawaii/74697/ The impacts of imperialism perpetuate my UN Sustainability goal/ issue of poverty here in Hawaiʻi because we need approval from higher authority, such as the US to commend certain “rights” or ideas to go through. Imperialism caused confusion between national identities versus native identities. However, this understanding of imperialism in History helps us to navigate solutions to these problems here in Hawaiʻi since it makes more people aware and we can learn from the past. In Hawaiʻi, we see change in poverty everyday, there are so many non-profit organizations that help with homelessness, and so many activists who speak up about this issue. Akana, H.K. (2020).
