Kauaʻi has many beaches that are covered in trash and pollution. We feel as members of the community we have the responsibility to restore the beach to the prime state it was once. As a child, my parents often told me not to go to certain beaches because it was too lepo (dirty). I want to have the opportunity to tell my children that they can go to any beach because it's clean and safe. Hawaiʻi suffers from ocean pollution drastically, if we were to reduce or eradicate ocean pollution completely then our home would most definitely improve and our children could swim in a safe and clean ocean. It doesn't personally connect to me or my family, I am doing this for the betterment of Hawaiʻi and its future generations. I think that with the cooperation of the non-profit organization 808 Cleanups it is very possible for me to make a difference in the community. 808 Cleanups has already accomplished a myriad of goals with the help of other community members. It is important that we make/ leave a better world for our children and the generations to come. I feel I could learn the real effects of ocean pollution when getting out into the community and working with my hands. I feel I could truly learn how to appreciate the ocean and all it does for us, with the Kahiau project I can see how we treat the ocean and how it should be treated if we want to have one in the future.
