What are some examples of how IMPERIALIZATION / GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
One example had to deal with Japanese imperialization came costly events such as the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on Pearl Harbor and laid it to ruins. The impacts of the bombing were much more than human life loss and damage to military ships. It would lead to pollution in the water, and then to near uninhabitable water for aquatic life. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? Yes, I have family that passed away in the Pearl Harbor attack or Japan's imperialization attempt to colonize Hawaiʻi. I feel that if it weren't for Japan's act of imperialism then our home, Hawaiʻi or Hawaiʻi's ocean could possibly be a much better place. What, if anything, are you learning about Imperialization/Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed? Now understanding that the impacts of imperialization and globalization lead to the condition our ocean is in, It only motivates me to want to reinstate the ocean into a once again good state. Knowing the oceans terrible condition is due to man's selfish and greedy actions just states that it's man's responsibility to fix our own mistakes.

What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
Ocean pollution and the decline in marine life are a few examples of the challenges colonization has created. Colonist brought the plastic that to this day pollutes the ocean, they have changed the condition of the ocean forever. From the pollution that was a result of colonization led to the decline in marine life. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? Yes, ocean pollution affects me on a personal level. I was brought up in this world to always take care of the ocean and the marine life that inhabits it. Our ancestors knew the importance of having a healthy and sustainable ocean. We need the ocean to survive, coexistence between us and marine life is crucial to the future of the Hawaiian Islands and us as humans. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? Ocean pollution wasn't much of a threat in the far past, but with the years that came, so did foreigners and the product of their arrival was colonization. As colonization took place, the Hawaiian Islands were changing drastically. With colonizers came their idea that we aren't using the land "correctly." They would then use it "better" and in the process of their "better" use of land, they would pollute it. The pollution started by colonist is left for our generation to clean up, we have been left with the effect of their "better" use of land. Kauaʻi has many beaches that are covered in trash and pollution. We feel as members of the community we have the responsibility to restore the beach to the prime state it was once. As a child, my parents often told me not to go to certain beaches because it was too lepo (dirty). I want to have the opportunity to tell my children that they can go to any beach because it's clean and safe. Hawaiʻi suffers from ocean pollution drastically, if we were to reduce or eradicate ocean pollution completely then our home would most definitely improve and our children could swim in a safe and clean ocean. It doesn't personally connect to me or my family, I am doing this for the betterment of Hawaiʻi and its future generations. I think that with the cooperation of the non-profit organization 808 Cleanups it is very possible for me to make a difference in the community. 808 Cleanups has already accomplished a myriad of goals with the help of other community members. It is important that we make/ leave a better world for our children and the generations to come. I feel I could learn the real effects of ocean pollution when getting out into the community and working with my hands. I feel I could truly learn how to appreciate the ocean and all it does for us, with the Kahiau project I can see how we treat the ocean and how it should be treated if we want to have one in the future.
Over the winter break (December 20th - January 7th), I confirmed the dates that my group and I can possibly cooperate and participate with the 808 Cleanups non-profit organization. I reached out to each group member and organized the days throughout the coming months at which we can participate and assist the non-profit organization 808 Cleanups.
